Romantic Getaway for Two

Trish Z, Boston, MA

Andrea is a great host. Not only have she and her husband thoughtfully built and outfitted their home, but they have also thoughtfully landscaped their lot to support local wildlife (it is a certified urban habitat!) and maximize the feeling of privacy. Up on the spacious deck or in the amazing hot tub, one has the feeling of being in a secluded treehouse. As others have mentioned, this home is bright and airy with plenty of space to stretch out and explore, but also featuring cozy nooks for alone or couple time. Others have also pointed out that the walls do not go to the ceiling, so I was worried that the lack of privacy in the bathroom (we were a couple traveling together). However, the bathroom has both a well placed ceiling fan and vent and we discovered while trying to converse that the sound from one (or both) provided plenty of "masking" for those who are shy about bathroom sounds. We also loved the large shower which helped us get ready more quickly in the morning. The kitchen is nicely outfitted with everything one needs to cook of heat things up if you want to eat in. I was concerned upon discovering no microwave but found that the convection oven let us easily reheat leftovers for breakfast. You can tell that the owners responded to feedback from prior guests, as the beds were cozy - even for the one who was worried about transitioning from a tempurpedic for the weekend. And the black curtains helped to contain the abundant sunlight and allow the sleepyhead to sleep in every morning. We spent a fair amount of time just relaxing in the hot tub and enjoying the reliable wifi. Although we never quite got to the NES, they have quite a nice collection of games for all ages - including Zelda! Although we did not watch (Roku) tv, we did enjoy the Netfix. And no worries for the less technically inclined...Andrea and Greg have everything set to go and we'll placed notes and an enormous binder of information to answer any of your questions. There is also a collection of maps and brochures. We did wander downtown and also ventured out to Stand Up Outfitters in New Bern to try our hand at Paddle boarding. The owners, Charley and Kathy (?) we're amazingly informative not only about their beloved sport but also the town, restaurants & things to do. As a carnivore and a vegetarian, we were a bit concerned about our ability to satisfy both. We ate at the Thai Thai Seafood restaurant one night and at the 37th street Pizzaria (sic) another. The Thai food was good especially considering the small town and location. The Italian was nice - we enjoyed the garlic bread immensely, found the lasagna meaty with a nicely flavored sauce and the vegetarian pizza quite tasty. Plenty of leftovers for breakfast from both places, too. We really enjoyed our stay and highly recommend the...

I loved how the house was built, and I especially loved that they had everything in its place, with little notes explaining where things were. I had a blast playing with the nintendo. Even though I didnt see Andrea, I still felt like I was comfortable and welcomed into her home. I played with the kitten and fed the chicken! The morning views of the river was the best so far! Thanks Andrea!!!

Andrea and Greg were the most gracious hosts! We needed a last minute place to stay and Andrea was most accommodating. Both Greg and Andrea can be described as care free with a kindred spirit to all things outdoors. Both have a knack for knowing when to engage in conversation and when to give you your space. Enjoyed getting to know them and look forward to out next visit! House was everything advertised and more. Very homey...great open spaces and nice view of the Neuse River. Bedroom was a little quirky but very comfortable. Kitchen was the center piece of open area with large center island which was great for gatherings. Decks were spacious and went all the way around the home. Living area was complete with swing and monkey bars! Would recommend the New Bern Round House to all people visiting the New Bern area.

Group of Friends Getaway before College Begins

It helps to think of this place as less of a rental property and more as the house of your favorite quirky aunt and uncle. The place is chock full of thoughtful additions that make you feel welcome. From the fully stocked spice shelf to the large collection of DVDs to the bicycles, frisbees, boardgames, and books—all there for you to use. (Even a coffee grinder and a French press!) For all the hominess of it, though, it still strikes me as very clean and tidy, and everything's new and/or in good repair (with the exception of a doorknob that had a note: “Sorry, custom doorknob is on order!”). There's a big flat monitor TV with Netflix and Pandora, and a smaller TV with an old school Nintendo and a quite respectable selection of games (!!!). Cute notes are posted all around telling you how to use stuff—from the wifi password to instructions for the hot tub to a note in the freezer telling you that you can get bags of ice from a little shop across the street for $1/bag, honor system. This place doesn't have bad points as much as some things you should be aware of. To begin with, the beds and pillows tend toward the extra-firm side of the spectrum, so consider bringing a pillow or two if you like 'em extra fluffy. Also, the layout is very open, and in a big circle, so everyone can hear everything that happens. Meaning, if your friends are in the living room, and you're in the bathroom, you might feel a little self-conscious. The location was good—just outside of downtown New Bern, easy driving to everything. All in all, this was a fantastic place, and, as long as you bring a soft pillow and don't mind something of a lack of privacy, I heartily recommend it.

Place was great! Looked exactly as the pictures showed. We could have used a couple of couches for the days we just wanted to sit around, but that's the only negative. The hot tub was such a delight, even on a hot summer day. I wish I was still there. A massive thunderstorm rolled across the sky one afternoon/evening--the round house is PERFECT for enjoying the changes in weather if you're into it.

Andrea and Greg were fantastic hosts. A pleasure to be around, and also gave us time to ourselves. They are sensitive to this balance and also great conversationalists. Very warm and welcoming, they even made us breakfast! I can't imagine staying with better people or a more unique home in the New Burn area. Stay at the round house!!!

Bridgeton RiverFest Weekend 'Home Away from Home' for Six Artists & Child!

Andria, Durham, NC
Date of Stay June 23, 2012

A beautiful and eclectic house with lovely nuances. While the walls do not go all the way to the ceiling we enjoyed the comforts of every room that has been tastefully decorated with a minimalist style. It was fun really getting to know the other couples we went with and we all felt like youths again talking back and forth, and working in the kitchen together while our audience sat on the other side of the long bar. The location was good for the small town, and if you're docking your boat at the harbor for an evening retreat this is a nice place to do so. New Bern is conveniently across the bridge if you're looking for something to do- Bridgeton is small and basically a bedroom community from what I could gather.

Great Vacation Rental!

We stayed here over the weekend and had a great time! It's definitely a very cool and unique place to stay and beats out a hotel any day of the week. We loved the wrap around deck and hot tub, our son loved their Nintendo (the original one!) and our dog loved all the fresh air as we had the doors and windows open. The location is just quick 5 minute drive over to downtown New Bern and a good central point to get to other nearby cities (we hit the fossil museum up in Aurora and Cape Lookout down by Beaufort during our stay). Because it is a round house and pretty open, it does bring a lot of light in the morning so you may want to adjust your schedule a bit to go to bed a little earlier since you'll likely wake up earlier. Considering we weren't planning on sleeping in late, it wasn't a problem for us. The place is very clean, well decorated and has a lot of nice amenities. Not to mention the owners, Andrea and Greg, were super nice and helpful! We highly recommend staying here if you're planning on being in or around New Bern!

Pleasant, Quirky, Worth Twice the Price!

Bob & Catheryn, NC
Date of Stay May 12, 2012

This is a very pleasant but quirky place. Brand new and modern, the decoration is retro 30s collectable things like old suitcases. The bed is a smallish queen futon; very firm, and maybe not to everyone's taste, especially those used to pillow top kings. But the aura is very Zen and open and green and natural-- especially the hot tub-jacuzzi which is amazing. The shades don't darken the room enough, if you need blackout, but I think the very accommodating owners will fix that . They said they are still a work in progress, and honestly want to please. Worth twice the price! We truly appreciate you letting us stay at your place. It was the perfect stop-over for our trip to Ocracoke.

Rachel Carson Reserve Field Trips

Summer Public Field Trips on the Rachel Carson Reserve

Public field trips on the Rachel Carson component of the N.C. National Estuarine Research Reserve occur on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:30-10:30am during June, July and August. All programs are open and free to the public but reservations and telephone confirmation of reservation is required at least the day before the field trip as boat space is limited. Call (252) 838-0883 to make reservations or for more information.

The Reserve offers three types of field trips:

  1. Nature hikes occur during low tides, when the most amount of land is exposed on the island. Be prepared to get your shoes wet and muddy. We require close-toed shoes because of the abundance of oysters on the island. You may also have the opportunity to swim on the nature hike, so dress accordingly.
  2. Boardwalk trips occur at high tide, when the water is high enough in the estuary for our 24’ skiff to easily navigate around the island to our boardwalk located on Carrot Island.
  3. Circumnavigation cruise on our 24’ skiff around the Reserve allows visitors a chance to view Middle Marsh after a brief stop at the boardwalk.
On all three trips, we encourage you to bring sunglasses, hats, binoculars, water and sunscreen.
All field trips are free, however, we do accept donations for our nonprofit organization, Friends of the Reserve (FOR).

Hot Tub: How to Uncover & Cover

How to Easily Uncover & Cover the Hot Tub during Your Stay!

We ask that you first and always rinse your bathing suit and shower thoroughly before soaking in the hot tub.  This will help the water to stay clean and easily manageable.  The hot tub does not like hair products, skin products, make-up, lotions, laundry detergent residue.  If you don't shower your water will not be as pristine as it could be!

As you can see, the hot tub can easily be uncovered and covered back up by one person.

 Unlock the four clips.

Lift the cover and fold over on the other half

  Pull back towards you.

Slowly ease the entire thing down.

Now you're ready to soak in pure salt water bliss!  No yucky chlorine smell or residue left behind on your skin!

Now the reverse!

Life the entire cover up, getting both halves.

  Push to the halfway point.

  Unfold to cover entire spa.

Be sure to lock all four latches!!

If you don't latch it, one of our random windy days or nights are liable to knock the cover off!

Your towels and bathing suits will dry outside in a flash, simply hang on the cable railing and weave between the cables to keep from blowing away!

Kayaking Adventures: Pursuit of the Passionflower

by:  Gregory Fahy

While out on a kayak trek down the Neuse river I found a field of passion flowers (Passiflora incarnata)! These exotic looking flowers are actually native to Eastern North Carolina and love sandy, dry, low lying areas and full sun. In about a month the flowers will produce passion fruit and I'll have to go back and harvest some. The vine tends to live about three to five years growing very vigorously and then dies back letting it's offspring take over the area. This plant can be dried and makes for some excellent herbal tea for anxiety and insomnia.

Here is the route I took from the New Bern Round House to Fairfield Harbor. If you plan on taking this route and not heading back the same way be sure to have transportation lined up that can pick you and the kayaks up at Farifield Harbor. Enjoy zooming in on the map and click on the markers to view fishing spots, photo opportunities as well as where the passion flowers are!

What's Cooking?

We've added a couple of new (well, thrifted..) kitchen toys to the New Bern Round House kitchen.  A few trial runs and I say "yes!"  These two fun appliances are here to stay for all guests to enjoy.

First, we tried out the juicer that I found at our local Habitat for Humanity.  I had my doubts but this simple baby did wonders juicing a pile of apples!  The pure, fresh apple juice was a treat all by itself.  Just slice, insert, turn on, catch the juice!  We had a bit with our picnic lunch on the deck in the lovely spring sunshine and saved the rest for our newly invented, spiced apple toddy.  (The toddy was okay, could use some perfecting though!  No objections from anyone when it came time to tweak the recipe and mix some more!)

Next, we have a hand me down deep fryer.  A few weeks ago, I was lucky to receive a big batch of *eek* fresh, local lard from family friends!  I'm telling ya, it may sound like bad health in the works but we've been rendering our own kitchen fats for a few years now and have had excellent results.  It makes for the best biscuits, pastries, etc.  I'm partial to doing things the local way, and this beats vegetable oils that have traveled the country!  Anyway, in it we fried some chicken legs and yum!  Juicy and delicious!  If you find yourself staying here during a weekend, do yourself a favor and find Rainbow Meadow Farms at the New Bern Farmer's Market (Saturday from 8-2)  They do a lovely job raising, happy, healthy pastured raised animals.  Did I mention we are huge proponents of supporting local business?

I think you'll find these two new kitchen goodies as welcome additions your food preparation during your stay, have fun, be safe and enjoy entertaining friends and family!
